Artist Statement

As a first-generation Mexican-American visual artist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I navigate the complexities of identity, culture, and self-expression through a transformative artistic practice. Grounded in my bicultural upbringing and self-defined Mestizo identity, my work seamlessly intertwines personal narratives with cultural history.

Drawing from Mesoamerican mythology and Neo-Mexicanism narratives, I employ symbolic imagery to explore themes of human embodiment and internal dialogue on race, sexuality, and identity.

My portrait and figurative paintings, often featuring individuals from my community, serve as extensions of self-portraiture and
layered visual storytelling. At the heart of my practice is Nepantla—a liminal space of in-betweenness that encapsulates the complexities of living between worlds. This conceptual framework allows me to bridge cultural lineage with psychological landscapes, creating work that challenges traditional artistic hierarchies while embracing a mixed-media approach enriched with found objects from urban environments.
