Chanel Sebala-Bumanglag (Kānaka Maoli)
Artist Statement
Aloha mai kākou,
‘o Chanel Sebala-Bumanglag ko’u inoa. My ethnicities are Hawaiian, Filipino, Maori, Black Foot, German, and English.
I was born on the island of O’ahu in Pu’uloa as the second oldest of 8 siblings. Thankful to be a wife, mother to three girls and grandmother to six.
I find peace, joy, artistic and creative flow while sitting in the ‘aina (land) observing all that Ke Akua (Creator God) reveals to me. It is here that I connect with Him and receive mele (songs) or pictures in my mind that inspire the art I create to become mo’olelo (stories) or songs of encouragement. My prayer is that brothers and sisters would be empowered to “Ho’i I Ka Piko”, (return to our Creator), our true source. He is the one who draws us to Him, renews us, restores us and the one who is the author and finisher of our story.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to bless you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future “ Jeremiah 29:11
These truths are embedded deep within each piece of art He has skilled my hands to create. My hope is that those who “Kilo” (look upon with deep observation using all senses) my art, will hear and feel the heart beat of Ke Akua calling them back to Him.
